Highlighting the Anniversary at Sunset Cantina

It's been a year since we embarked on our journey to bring the vibrant flavors and warm hospitality of Mexico to the heart of Boston. At Sunset Cantina, we are a team of passionate young entrepreneurs with over 30 combined years of experience in the hospitality industry and a shared love for Mexican cuisine. Our goal has always been to create an unforgettable dining experience for our guests by combining fresh ingredients, crafted cocktails, attentive service, and the creation of lasting memories.

Located at 916 Commonwealth Ave, Sunset Cantina has long been a popular meeting spot for the University community. After closing its doors temporarily, we reopened just before Christmas last year, with a renewed focus on authentic Mexican fare. Under the vision and leadership of Catarina Chang (SHA’11), one of the co-owners and a graduate of the School of Hospitality Administration, Sunset Cantina underwent a transformation that elevated the dining experience while maintaining the familiar decor and fun atmosphere.

Journey and Vision to Bring Authentic Mexican Cuisine to Boston

Our menu reflects our commitment to authenticity and showcases the rich culinary heritage of Mexico. We take pride in serving dishes that are true to their roots, foregoing the Tex-Mex influences of the past. Our tacos are filled with flavorful meats and traditional toppings, and we steer clear of using lettuce as a filler. Some of our must-try dishes include beef birria, a spicy stewed meat served in tacos and quesadillas, along with ceviches, enchiladas, flautas, and tortas.

Complementing our food menu is a carefully curated drink selection featuring Colombian and Mexican variations of the Michelada, a spicy beer and tomato juice concoction, along with a variety of margaritas and cocktails like the Mexican Mule.

In addition to the focus on culinary excellence, Sunset Cantina boasts an extensive bar stocked with a wide range of tequilas and craft beers. Whether you're looking to savor the smooth flavors of a premium tequila or enjoy a refreshing beer, we have something to suit every taste.

While we've introduced new dishes that highlight the diversity of Mexican cuisine, we understand the importance of honoring tradition and meeting the expectations of our loyal patrons. As a result, we made sure to keep Tex-Mex favorites like taco salads and fajitas on the menu. And when the regulars expressed their love for the nachos, we listened and decided to keep them unchanged, ensuring that our long-standing customers feel right at home.

Address and Transformation of Sunset Cantina Under Catarina Chang's Leadership

Behind the scenes, our team is a collaboration of culinary talents. Alongside Catarina Chang, we have three partners who bring a wealth of experience from the dining scene in East Boston: Jason Bautista, executive chef at La Hacienda restaurant, Aldo Callejas, owner of La Hacienda, and Kilder Cardona, owner of Barney's Grill. Together, they share a passion for creating authentic Mexican dishes and delivering exceptional dining experiences.

To lead our talented kitchen team, we brought on Carlos Alvarenga, formerly of the acclaimed Masa in the South End, as our executive chef. With his expertise and culinary vision, Sunset Cantina continues to elevate the standards of Mexican cuisine in Boston.

The reopening of Sunset Cantina last year was not just about bringing back a beloved eatery; it was also an opportunity to create a space where the community could come together, celebrate, and make lasting memories. We are grateful for the support we have received from the BU community, students, faculty, and staff alike.

Sunset Cantina has become more than just a restaurant; it has become a place where friendships are forged, celebrations are held, and the spirit of Mexico comes alive.

As we celebrate our first anniversary, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey. From our dedicated team members to our valued guests, your support and enthusiasm have been the driving force behind our success.
